Fleet and logistics are one of the world’s biggest and most competitive industries. So, managing the widely spread business is also cumbersome, and there comes the application of digitalization – fleet management software. But why don’t we hear from our influencer?
Roy is a Transportation Management & HR Specialist. He built and managed large award-winning international fleets for 20 years before starting TRANSCOM Fleet Services Inc.
TRANSCOM is now another award-winning company, as his team works with fleets across Canada to improve their management, safety, compliance, freight contracts, equipment care, driver teams, etc.
We can go into a trucking operation and turn it around or just help it improve. We are not a consulting company; we are a do-the-work company.
Having spoken at many Canadian and USA National Conferences, it is the attending group that gives you the spark to do well. The day we don’t impact individuals and trucking companies, we will stop doing what we do.
I feel the biggest challenge is the lack of quality management in trucking. We have many good fleets in North America, but we have a lot of poorly run trucking companies too. The number of fleets in Facility Insurance is a good indicator of this. I think the biggest change in trucking since the pandemic is in society. Many families, schools, children, and young adults have learned about essential services and how important trucking is to everyone’s daily lifestyle.
Transportation has always advanced technically as fast or faster than some industries. As an example, we have been using satellites for 30 years.
AI has moved into our equipment, load planning, and dispatch. Real-time diagnostics is catching equipment failures before they happen, helping dispatch. The truck tells dispatch and maintenance it needs to come off the road. Digitizing our common documents has also been a great new advancement for both accuracy and productivity through Professional Drivers, Dispatch, and Admin Teams. i.e., BOLs, Del Receipts, Vehicle Inspections, Customs Documents, etc.
In my opinion, trucking and logistics will never stop advancing. Not all technical advances will be successful, as we have already had a couple of “Driverless” companies fail. I don’t see electric trucks getting much beyond short haul or city services by 2025. The Professional Driver shortage will be serious by 2025 as older drivers continue to retire in big numbers. Tonnage hauled will continue to grow around the world, so the near future and the far future look great for all transportation.
